The Partners Dr Nevil H Fowler, Senior Partner BM MRCGP Reg: Southampton 1986 nevils camera Xmas 06 - K & F's party 025Nevil is from Stockton-on-Tees and trained at Southampton University, qualifying with a BM in 1986.  His first year “house jobs” were at North Tees General Hospital and Weymouth Hospital.  Subsequent hospital training followed with Accident and Emergency in Middlesborough and a year of ENT in Lancaster then North London.  He started his General Practice training locally in Weymouth and Dorchester.  During this time he was attached to Wyke Regis Health Centre as a GP trainee with hospital experience in Orthopaedics, Elderly Care, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology and more ENT.  After completing the rotation a further six months of obstetrics and Gynaecology followed in Dorchester hospital before he joined Dr Baird and Dr Pouncey at Portesham (then Long Bredy) Surgery in 1993.  He gained further qualifications in the form of the MRCGP exam in 1994. He is married to Diane, an occupational health nurse, and has two (nearly) grown up children Eleanor and Edward. His interests outside work include birdwatching and anything to do with natural history, and walking.

Dr Louise Beale, Partner MB BS London DRCOG MRCGP DFFP: London 1999 Louise Beale_0192 Louise grew up in Somerset and Wiltshire and went to school in Bath.  She qualified from the Royal Free Hospital school of Medicine, Hampstead, in 1999.  She completed house jobs in Basildon and then Dorset County Hospital and then a post in Elderly Care at Poole Hospital, before spending a fantastic year in New Zealand, where she worked in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Accident and Emergency and Psychiatry.  On her return she spent six months as a trainee GP at the Harvey Practice in Merley/Broadstone before spending another six months working in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Poole & Bournemouth hospitals.  Louise then spent a final year completing her training as a GP at the Talbot Medical Centre, Bournemouth.  In 2004 she returned to the Harvey Practice as a salaried GP where she stayed until joining the Portesham Surgery team in September

2012. Louise met her husband Rob at medical school and they both fell in love with Dorset during their house jobs in Dorchester.  They were lucky enough to be able to move to West Dorset when Rob was appointed as a consultant anaesthetist at Dorset County Hospital.  They have three young children – Thomas, Isabel and Edward – and when they get the chance to relax they enjoy walking, riding, cycling and skiing. Following Dr Baird’s retirement we are currently recruiting a third partner and will let you know as soon as we have an announcement to make!

Doctors – our 2 salaried GPs both joined us in January 2017.

Dr Debbie Smithers – has worked in general practice for 14 years.  She graduated from Liverpool in 1990 and spent 2 years in Australia, including working with the flying doctors.  She lives in Burton Bradstock with her husband and 2 daughters.

The Practice Nurse Team provides a full range of nursing services in the Surgery including ECGs, blood tests, smear tests, health checks for new patients, ravel vaccinations, contraceptive advice, ear syringing, dressings and removal of stitches. These services are provided for housebound patients by the District Nurse team.

Rachel Holland trained as a nurse at Leicester University, gaining a BSc (Hons) in 2000.  She worked at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth in the critical care unit for 5 years before going into practice nursing.  She moved to Dorset in July 2013 with her family, and joined our team in November 2013.  Rachel’s skills include cervical cytology, chronic disease management, spirometry, travel and children’s vaccinations, ear syringing, dressings, ECGs, health checks and assisting Dr Baird with minor operations.

Rachelle Pearce joined our nursing team in June 2015 having known our surgery and patients for many years in her previous role as a district nurse with the Bridport team.

Tabatha Lewis: our Healthcare Assistant trained as a nursing assistant in 1991 and worked at Herrison Hospital and Blackdown Community Hospital as well as at a nursing home in Cheshire, before joining us in 2008.  Tabby does a wide range of procedures including phlebotomy, ECGs, ear syringing, dressings and NHS Health Checks.  She is also trained as a Smokestop Advisor and has successfully supported many patients in their path to becoming non-smokers.

Management team: responsible for day-to-day management of clinics, the practice building, the staff, health & safety etc – come to us with any non-clinical problems.

Alison Dunbar – Practice Manager.  Alison started here in 2005 after working for Amnesty International in London for 5 years and then for Ashley Chase Estate in the Bride Valley for 18 years.  Alison took over the Practice Manager’s role in 2008.

Sara Griffith – Deputy Practice Manager. Sara’s career in the NHS began with eight years at West Harptree Surgery near Bristol, and then at the Royal South Hants hospital where she ran the X-ray department, followed by two years at Morton-in-Marsh Surgery in Gloucestershire.  She lived on Sark for a couple of years and then came to Dorset and to our Practice in 1996.

Reception Staff

Julie Tribe is one of our longest-serving receptionists.  She has always worked in healthcare, first in Cornwall with the Family Practitioners Committee (now called the Family Health Service).  She moved to Dorset 23 years ago when her navy husband was posted here, worked in the Bed Bureau in A&E and on a fixed-term contract for another local practice before joining us in 1999.

Lorraine Willcock has lived in the Dorset area for many years and has worked in the surgery since 2004. Lorraine previously worked for Waitrose in Dorchester and she is in charge of managing the flu clinics every year here at the surgery.

Jackie Clark joined the team in March 2017 and lives in Portesham with her partner and son.  Jackie has 9 years experience of working within the NHS.

Lisa Tatchell joined the team in June 2017.  Lisa has lived in Dorset all her life.  She worked in child care whilst her children were small, but previous to that was a travel agent.

Admin staff Our medical secretaries each work two days per week and share the referral work as well as covering the reception desk as needed.

Anne Highfield was born and brought up in Weymouth.  She previously worked as a contracts manager for a local training company, joined us as a receptionist in 2005 then left to have her children.  She has kept firmly in touch with us, providing us with holiday cover on numerous occasions, and we’ve finally got her back two days a week doing medical referrals and the book-keeping.

Jo Dench worked in customer services in a variety of areas including retail, Agincare and Dorset Police, before joining us in 2014.  (Currently on Maternity Leave from June 2017).

Caren Wigginton brings a wealth of experience to our team, having worked for Dorset County Council in various roles for 26 years.  She took a year off but was tempted back into work with us in October 2014.

Lesley Dinham-Smith  joined us in June 2017 as Medical Secretary/Receptionist to cover Jo’s maternity leave.

Dispensary Staff Caroline Cox, Bridget Wetherall, and Jo Barratt  can advise you on your medications.

Caroline Cox is our Pharmacy Technician and joined the staff in May 2001 (to do four weeks’ holiday cover. 15 years later and we can’t imagine the dispensary without her!). She had previously worked in Boots since the age of 15.

Bridget Wetherall joined us in 2003, also having worked for many years in Boots in Bridport.

Jo Barratt has lived in Bridport for 16 years, but she originally comes from Devon. She worked for Boots for 8 years and came to the surgery in 2006. Her role is general dispenser and she is in charge of managing blister packs.     

Glynis Beal joined us in June 2016.  She lives in Dorchester with her 2 sons.  Glynis has been a pharmacist in the community previously for 20 years.
